On March 17, 1919, the world welcomed one of the most influential voices in music—Nat King Cole. With his velvety smooth vocals, masterful piano playing, and pioneering television presence, Cole transformed jazz and pop music forever. His contributions broke barriers, set new standards in the industry, and paved the way for future generations of Black artists.
Born Nathaniel Adams Coles in Montgomery, Alabama, Cole grew up in Chicago, where he was immersed in the rich jazz culture of the 1920s and ’30s. Inspired by jazz greats like Earl Hines, Cole honed his piano skills and formed the Nat King Cole Trio, known for redefining small-ensemble jazz with a focus on rhythm and melody.
As a Black artist in America during the mid-20th century, Cole faced relentless racism. He was attacked on stage by white supremacists, denied accommodations while touring, and even blocked from purchasing a home in a white neighborhood. Despite these obstacles, he remained dignified and resolute, using his talent to transcend racial barriers.
In 1956, he became the first Black man to host a national television show, The Nat King Cole Show. Although the show struggled to secure sponsors due to racial tensions, Cole’s presence on television helped break ground for future Black entertainers in mainstream media.
Cole’s soul-stirring voice delivered some of the most beloved songs in music history, including:
🎶 Unforgettable
🎶 Mona Lisa
🎶 The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)
🎶 L-O-V-E
🎶 Smile
His ability to blend jazz with pop sensibilities captivated audiences worldwide, earning him multiple Grammy Awards and a lasting place in the hearts of music lovers.
Even after his passing in 1965, Cole’s influence remains immeasurable. His daughter, Natalie Cole, carried on his legacy, famously recording a virtual duet with him on Unforgettable, introducing his music to a new generation. Today, artists across genres continue to cite him as an inspiration, and his recordings remain some of the most cherished in jazz and pop history.
Nat King Cole’s journey was one of perseverance, innovation, and timeless artistry. His music, his voice, and his impact on the industry remain truly Unforgettable.
