Denis Colin Leary was born on August 18, 1957, in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Irish Catholic immigrants from County Kerry. His mother worked as a maid while his father supported the family as an auto mechanic. Growing up in a working-class household, Leary developed the sharp wit and keen observational humor that would later define his comedy. He attended Saint Peter-Marian High School before moving on to Emerson College in Boston, where he earned a degree in creative writing in 1981. During his time at Emerson, he founded the Emerson Comedy Workshop and eventually returned as a teacher of comedy writing for several years. In 2005, Emerson recognized his contributions to entertainment with an honorary doctorate.
Leary’s early influences came from groundbreaking comedians Richard Pryor and George Carlin, whose honesty and sharp social commentary shaped his own approach to humor. His career began with writing and comedy spots for MTV, which showcased his trademark high-energy rants. These performances led to his breakout film role in The Ref (1994), which opened the door to a string of movie appearances and television projects. He would go on to co-create and star in The Job and later Rescue Me, the acclaimed drama-comedy about a New York firefighter grappling with personal demons after 9/11.
In his personal life, Leary married author Ann Lembeck in 1989, and together they have two children, Jack and Devin. Although raised Catholic, he has distanced himself from organized religion, preferring to raise his children without fear-based beliefs. Off-stage, he is far more laid-back than his fiery comedic persona, a fact he has openly acknowledged.

He won a CableACE Award in 1996 for directing Favorite Deadly Sins, a Blockbuster Entertainment Award in 2000 for his performance in The Thomas Crown Affair, and the Humanitas Prize in 2012 for his work on Rescue Me. As a screenwriter, he co-wrote many episodes of Rescue Me, adapted the U.S. version of Sirens, and created Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, a series that allowed him to combine his passion for comedy, drama, and music.
