Joan Marie Larkin, known to the world as Joan Jett, was born on September 22, 1958, in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. The eldest of three children, she grew up in a Protestant household with her father, James, who worked in insurance, and her mother, Dorothy, who was a secretary. In 1967, the family relocated to Rockville, Maryland, where Joan attended Randolph Junior High School and Wheaton High School. After another move to West Covina, California, her parents eventually divorced, and she decided to adopt the name Joan Jett, believing it sounded more like a rock star. At the age of thirteen, she received her first guitar, but abandoned traditional lessons when her teacher insisted on folk songs instead of the rock anthems she dreamed of playing.
From her teenage years, Jett immersed herself in the Los Angeles glam rock scene, absorbing inspiration from acts such as Suzi Quatro, T. Rex, Sweet, and Slade. By the mid-1970s, she co-founded the groundbreaking all-female rock group The Runaways. Despite their short-lived run, the band left a deep imprint on rock history. Jett carried this energy forward with her next venture, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, a band that would define her career with hits like “I Love Rock ’n Roll” and “Bad Reputation.”
Beyond her work as a performer, Jett became a pioneer in the business side of music. Alongside producer Kenny Laguna, she founded Blackheart Records in 1980 after being turned down by nearly two dozen record labels. Through Blackheart, she released her own music and championed other artists including L7, Bikini Kill, The Dollyrots, Girl in a Coma, The Eyeliners, and even hip-hop acts like Big Daddy Kane and Professor Griff. Her commitment to amplifying punk and female-driven voices solidified her influence as both an artist and producer.
Jett has also collaborated with major names, recording with ex-Sex Pistols Steve Jones and Paul Cook, and co-writing with Desmond Child. While she never married or had children, she devoted her life to music and the artists she helped inspire. Her influence can be seen in the riot grrrl movement and in countless modern bands who credit her with paving the way.
Acting entered her career in the late 1980s with her role opposite Michael J. Fox in Light of Day. She later produced the 2010 biopic The Runaways, guiding Kristen Stewart in portraying her younger self. Jett has admitted that she enjoyed elements of acting, particularly when it intersected with her love of performance, but she has always emphasized that music remains her greatest passion.
Her achievements have been formally recognized with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, her inclusion on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and a Clio Music Lifetime Achievement Award. Even more telling is the devotion of musicians across genres who view her as the godmother of punk and the queen of rock and roll.
Joan Jett remains a living testament to independence, grit, and musical rebellion. She carved out space where there was none for women in rock and left behind a path for others to follow. Her story is not just one of hits and headlines, but of reshaping what it means to own your identity in music.
