In 2024, the Castellani Art Museum (CAM) at Niagara University hosted “Legacy in Pixels: AI Inspired by CAM’s Treasures,” a pioneering student-led exhibition that seamlessly blended traditional art with artificial intelligence. This innovative showcase was spearheaded by students from Niagara University’s International Marketing (MKT 325) course, under the guidance of Professors and museum professionals, including Ellen Owens, Michael J. Beam, Ed Millar, and Jess Conatser Minicucci.
The exhibition featured AI-generated artworks by 17 students, who drew inspiration from CAM’s extensive permanent collection. By feeding images of selected artworks into AI generators and iteratively refining them, students created unique digital pieces that reflected both the original art and their personal interpretations. Notable works included Abigail Dishaw’s “Indecision’s Toil” and Clara Barr’s “Timekeeper,” which delved into themes of human experience and societal dynamics.
The reaction to the exhibition was overwhelmingly positive. Dr. Shawn Daly, professor of the course, praised the collaborative effort, noting the significant support provided to students who were not traditionally trained in art. Jess Conatser Minicucci highlighted the rewarding experience of witnessing students engage deeply with AI technology and express themselves through this new medium.
While there is no official announcement regarding future iterations of “Legacy in Pixels,” the success of this exhibition underscores the potential for continued collaborations between CAM and Niagara University students. As CAM continues to explore the integration of digital art and AI, similar initiatives may emerge, further enriching the intersection of art, technology, and education.
