On May 17, 1912, the opera Don Quichotte, composed by Jules Massenet, had its London premiere at the London Opera House. Produced by Oscar Hammerstein, this marked the first time the opera was performed in England. The title role was sung by the legendary Russian bass Feodor Chaliapin, who had originated the part in the opera’s 1910 debut in Monte Carlo. Massenet composed the opera late in his life, inspired not directly by Cervantes’ novel, but by a French stage adaptation titled Le chevalier de la longue figure by Jacques Le Lorrain. The story is still rooted in the essence of Don Quixote, portraying a noble dreamer and his unshakable devotion to chivalry and love.
Jules Massenet himself was one of France’s most beloved opera composers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for works like Manon, Werther, and Thaïs. His music is distinguished by its emotional depth and melodic richness, often centered around romantic and tragic themes. In Don Quichotte, Massenet blends humor, tenderness, and melancholy, offering a deeply human portrayal of the aging knight.
The opera follows Don Quichotte and his squire Sancho Panza on a quest to retrieve a stolen necklace for the beautiful and flirtatious Dulcinée. Along the way, he famously mistakes windmills for giants and confronts a band of mountain thieves who, touched by his sincerity, return the necklace without a fight. When he presents it to Dulcinée, she rejects his love, and he ultimately dies, comforted by his belief in the ideals of love and honor. The work captures both the charm and tragedy of Cervantes’ iconic character, and Chaliapin’s performance helped define the role for generations.
Though Massenet’s Don Quichotte and the Broadway musical Man of La Mancha both draw from Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote, they are otherwise unrelated. Each reimagines the tale through its own unique artistic lens, shaped by its time, its creators, and its audience.
