There is some debate over the exact date of Raphael’s birth, with historical records suggesting both March 28 and April 6, 1483. Giorgio Vasari, in Lives of the Artists, wrote that Raphael was born on Good Friday at 3 a.m., which in 1483 fell on March 28. However, his epitaph, attributed to Pietro Bembo, states that he died on the same day he was born—April 6. Since Good Friday is a movable feast, some scholars believe this led to a clerical error, making March 28 the more likely birthdate.
Raphael’s works are renowned for their grace, harmony, and masterful composition, with The School of Athens (1511) standing as his most famous masterpiece. This fresco, housed in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, symbolizes the fusion of classical philosophy and artistic brilliance, featuring iconic figures such as Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates. As art historian Giorgio Vasari wrote, "He was a very loving person, affectionate to his friends, mild and courteous to all men, and in particular ready to oblige, and in every way most excellent."
His influence shaped Western art, inspiring generations of painters with his delicate use of perspective and emotion.
