Richard Griffiths was born Richard Thomas Griffiths on July 31, 1947, in Thornaby-on-Tees, England. His upbringing in a working-class family was unique in that both of his parents were profoundly deaf, which led him to learn sign language early in life. His father, a steelworker who also had a temper and a history as a part-time pub fighter, significantly influenced Griffiths’s personality and acting style. Despite leaving school at age 15 without formal qualifications, Griffiths worked as a porter at Littlewoods, where his manager encouraged him to return to education. This pivotal encouragement set him on the path toward acting, leading him to take drama classes at Stockton & Billingham College and later study drama at Manchester Polytechnic School of Theatre.
Griffiths began his career with the BBC’s Radio Drama Company before gaining attention on stage, particularly with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he performed notable Shakespearean roles. His film debut was in 1976, and he later became widely known for roles such as Uncle Monty in Withnail and I and Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter series. Despite these iconic roles, Griffiths often cited his role as Hector in The History Boys as his favorite, appreciating the emotional depth and complexity it offered. His portrayal earned him numerous awards, including the Olivier, Tony, and Drama Desk Awards, and he was honored with an OBE for services to drama in 2008.
He acknowledged his father’s influence on his raw, direct acting style and credited his early inspiration to seeing the play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Griffiths also looked up to renowned actors like Peter O’Toole, John Gielgud, and Ralph Richardson, admiring their sincerity and mastery of their craft. On a personal note, he married Heather Gibson in 1980, and the couple remained together until his death in 2013. They had no children.
Griffiths faced health challenges throughout his life. As a child, he suffered from severe asthma and was treated with daily hydrocortisone injections, which, while life-saving, caused damage to his hips later in life. Additionally, he had acromegaly, a condition related to his pituitary gland that affected his appearance and required treatment. Despite these obstacles, Griffiths maintained a successful career and became a mentor to younger actors such as Daniel Radcliffe, James Corden, and Jack Whitehall, who praised his kindness, humor, and support.
