This is the original speech that I wrote to introduce tonight's meeting. I cut some details out to keep the speech down to two minutes.
Good evening, fellow Toastmasters and honoured guests,
Welcome to tonight’s meeting — Voices of Freedom: Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future.
Tonight’s theme draws inspiration from two globally significant observances that share this date, June 19th: Juneteenth and World Sickle Cell Awareness Day.
Juneteenth marks a defining moment in history. On June 19th, 1865 — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation — the last group of enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free. This moment symbolizes both liberation and the long-delayed arrival of justice. It's a reminder that freedom is not just declared — it must be communicated, fought for, and protected. Today, Juneteenth is a time to honour the strength, culture, and contributions of the Black community, and to reflect on how far we’ve come — and how far we still need to go.
On the same day, we also recognize World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, a global campaign to bring attention to sickle cell disease — a painful and often overlooked genetic blood disorder that disproportionately affects people of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian descent. Beyond the science, this is a matter of equity: awareness, access to treatment, and compassion. It’s about ensuring that no one’s suffering is invisible, and that healthcare justice becomes part of our vision for a better world.
Together, these observances remind us that the pursuit of freedom isn’t limited to history books — it lives on in the fight for health equity, in the stories we tell, and in the voices we lift up.
So tonight, we speak not just for ourselves — but for those who paved the way, and those who need our voices now more than ever.
Whether you're delivering a prepared speech, responding to a Table Topic, or simply listening deeply, your presence matters. Your voice has power.
Let’s speak with purpose. Let’s listen with heart. And together, let’s honour the past while shaping a future grounded in justice, health, and true freedom for all.
Let the meeting begin.
